China’s “Trio” which includes Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines had a gradual financial decrease in the first quarter of 2021. The three airlines are highlighted for being the largest carriers of the country. The resurgence in Covid-19 is a reason for the financial decline. However, the airlines have reported an uplift in the number of passengers after March 2021.

Air China – The Flag Carrier

China Southern Airlines

Guangzhou-based airline of China reports a net loss of 4.1 billion Yuan. China Southern Airlines is a part of the “Big Three” of Chinese airlines. The carrier is exercising cut cost measures to improve its financial sheet. Meanwhile, after the first quarter of 2021, China Southern reports the largest reduction in its operating loss. Therefore, China Southern is not out of the game yet.

China Eastern Airlines

China Eastern Airlines Corporation is one of the largest airlines in China, with a fleet size of 581. Due to the global situation of Covid-19, the airline has faced pressure in the prevention of Covid-19 imported cases. The shanghai-based airline posted a net loss of 3.8 billion Yuan in the period January till March 2021. However, the number is the smallest as compared to the other two of “Big Three.”

Revival from the Red Quarter:

“Lunar New Year” is a rare opportunity for the highly competitive airline to earn a profit. Sporadic cases of Covid-19 impacted the Chinese Aviation Industry at an exponential rate. The first quarter of 2021 was another flashback of 2020 for the ‘Big Three’ airline. But China is expecting a solid recovery after May 2021.

Most countries have regulated Covid-19 vaccination rapidly. Despite the massive loss, the three airlines are striving hard to maintain a cautious tone. Soon, the “Big Three’ of China will be ready to exit the red zone.
